Dear Supporter,
In August of 2021 amidst the easing restrictions of COVID-19, we went ahead and carried out plantation of 2000 Karanj (Pongamia pinnata) saplings on 10 acres of selected land parcels in Mangavli. This exercise provided employment opportunity to 12 local people for 4 days and gave a sense of gratification to the many months-long process of surveys, community meetings, discussion and study! Interestingly, such is the deal with the herculean task of forest restoration - there is no instant gratification but the journey itself is extremely rewarding in all its stages.
It is a popular belief that planting saplings is the most important and responsible task for regenerating forests. However, ensuring their survival and nurturing their growth is the most critical phase in its entire lifecycle! Our field researchers Rajesh and Mahadev took on these task in the months of November - December 2021. There were 39 local women and 20 local men employed for these activities for 7 days. They carried out grass cutting, mulching, drawing fire-lines and other upkeep activities to ensure healthy growth of the saplings. In their assessment of the saplings, our team documented a survival rate of more than 90%. Of course, the extended monsoon, our careful site selection and the resilience of Karanj tree species itself contributed hugely to this and we are hopeful that at least 70-75% of the saplings will see through the challenging times of the upcoming summer season. This by itself will be a milestone in this long journey!
During this period, our team also conducted biodiversity surveys and community meetings to identify further land parcels which can be regenerated through plantation of Karanj - which is a nitrogen-fixing tree and is also economically important and can pave way for a symbiotic relationship between the forests and the forest-dependant communities. We reiterated our commitment towards buying the entire production of seeds from the trees at economically attractive price and ensuring that the local communities get livelihood opportunities during plantation and maintenance of the saplings over the next 10 years - something towards which we have already delivered, and which will be recurrent and periodic in nature. This convinced the community since there was a sustainable economic benefit attached to the forest regeneration and conservation plan. Five farmers came forward to carry out agroforestry and plantation activities on a total of 18 acres of their forest land.
Currently as I write, we are right in the middle of the third Omicron wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is a lesson in resilience to be learnt from the Karanj tree and we are persevering through lockdowns and quarantines to adhere to our planning. We have our eyes set on June 2022 - when we will carry out plantation of 5000 saplings (right now being developed in our Sangameshwar nursery) on 15 - 20 acres of forest land. By then of course, these 2000 saplings will have powered through their infancy and come out bigger and stronger - all thanks to the efforts of our local supporters, our efficient team members and your continued support!
Thank you once again.
Best regards,
Suchitra
