This project will rehabilitate a damaged community water system in Degehabur, Ethiopia, restoring safe and reliable water for 500 vulnerable people. It will reduce water-related health risks and improve hygiene and resilience for approximately 2,000 community members affected by water scarcity.
Degehabur communities face serious water shortages because an existing community water system is damaged and cannot provide reliable, safe water. Around 500 vulnerable people are directly affected, while approximately 2,000 other residents experience increased pressure on limited water sources. Families must spend more time collecting water and may rely on unsafe sources, increasing health and hygiene risks, especially for women, children, older people, and persons with disabilities.
This project will rehabilitate the damaged community water system by repairing or replacing essential pipes, fittings, and other non-functioning components. It will also support technical installation, water-quality testing, hygiene education, and training for a local water-management committee. Once restored, the system will provide safer and more reliable water to 500 people and reduce pressure on limited water sources used by approximately 2,000 additional community members.
Restoring the water system will create lasting benefits by reducing dependence on unsafe and distant water sources, lowering water-related health risks, and saving time spent collecting water. Women, children, older people, and persons with disabilities will benefit from safer and more accessible water. A trained community water committee will oversee routine maintenance, user participation, and minor repairs, helping the system remain functional and supporting long-term community resilience.
