Challenge

In early 2018, the Anglophone crisis started, and schools in Tombel's rural villages have been devastated. Students sit on floors after benches were burnt, they lack proper toilets, leading to unsanitary conditions, poor academic performance, and high dropout rates, especially among girls. Hope Builders aims to restore these schools by providing 1,500 benches, 20 toilets, and a healthier learning environment, empowering 3,000 students and fostering lasting change in these affected communities.

Solution

We work with local artisans and unemployed youth in rural Tombel to build durable school benches and hygienic toilets. The training covers bench and toilet construction, material sourcing, site preparation, maintenance, community engagement, and sustainability practices. By learning these practical skills, local artisans and youth not only create essential school infrastructure but also generate income, empowering themselves and contributing to rebuilding conflict-affected communities.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide 3,000 students in Tombel with proper benches and toilets, improving their education, hygiene, and overall learning environment. This will lead to better academic performance and a reduction in dropout rates, particularly among girls. This will encourage consistent school attendance and create safer spaces for learning. Local artisans and youth will acquire valuable construction and maintenance skills, boosting community livelihoods and promoting economic development.
