Empowering Teenage Mothers Through Life Skills and Mentorship

By Seguya Ivan | Project leader

As this month draws to a close, we reflect on a critical window of opportunity to drive sustainable change for teenage mothers in our communities. These young women often face interrupted education, social stigma, and economic exclusion, yet with targeted support, they can chart a path toward prosperity.

This month, we call for a focused, actionable impact: enabling one teenage mother to receive life-skills training—such as tailoring, agribusiness, or digital literacy—paired with ongoing mentorship. Mentorship provides a structured relationship where experienced guides help her navigate setbacks, access resources, and build confidence.

Evidence shows that combining practical skills with psycho-social support reduces dependency and accelerates reintegration. Each teenage mother empowered creates a multiplier effect: she can support her child, contribute to household income, and model resilience for peers.

Our professional recommendation is a two-pronged approach: (1) partner with local vocational centers for certified short courses, and (2) recruit community-based mentors trained in adolescent and youth-friendly approaches. Monitoring progress through monthly check-ins ensures accountability.

Let this month be remembered not for its end, but for the beginning of a teenage mother’s journey from vulnerability to agency. Support one, transform a future
