Families living around Lake Kivu in Goma, DR Congo, are struggling with hunger after years of conflict and volcanic disasters destroyed farms, livestock, and jobs. This project helps displaced women and unemployed youth rebuild their lives through sustainable sambaza and tilapia fishing. Donations will provide fishing nets, motorized boats, fish preservation equipment, and nutrition support for vulnerable children while creating stable income for local families.
Years of armed conflict, displacement, and the Nyiragongo volcanic eruptions destroyed farms, livestock, and local businesses across North Kivu in DR Congo. In Goma and villages around Lake Kivu, thousands of families now face severe food insecurity and child malnutrition. Many fishermen lost their boats, engines, and nets during the crisis, leaving women and unemployed youth without income or access to affordable protein-rich food.
This project will rebuild sustainable fishing livelihoods on Lake Kivu by providing fishing nets, motorized boats, engines, fish preservation equipment, and training for displaced families in Goma. Women fish sellers will earn stable income through sambaza and tilapia sales, while unemployed youth will receive paid work in fishing activities and net repair. Increased fish production will improve nutrition for vulnerable children and reduce hunger.
Over time, this project will strengthen food security and economic recovery for vulnerable families around Lake Kivu. Increased access to affordable fish will reduce child malnutrition in Goma while creating sustainable jobs for women and youth affected by war and displacement. Stable fishing livelihoods will also reduce illegal logging and environmental destruction near Virunga by giving families safer and more reliable sources of income.
