Cerro de Pasco is Coming to Italy!

Join us in Bolzano!

Next month, two inspiring young voices from Cerro de Pasco, one of the most polluted and oppressed places on Earth, will embark on a journey to Italy for the first time. Mireya and Albert will spend three weeks in Bolzano, in northern Italy, where they will share their powerful stories with students across South Tirol, thanks to our collaboration with Operation Daywork.

From March 10th to 28th, they will visit schools throughout the region, engaging with young people like themselves and shedding light on the realities of living in a heavily polluted mining town. But their message won’t stop in the classroom—several public events will offer everyone the chance to meet them and hear their experiences firsthand.

March 13th - Bolzano
Join us for a special public event in the heart of the city, where Mireya and Albert will speak about their lives and struggles.

March 15th - Milan (Fa’ La Cosa Giusta at 15:00)
At Italy’s largest event on Human Rights and Sustainability, Mireya and Albert, alongside Source International and Osservatorio Diritti, will discuss the devastating impact of mining on people and the environment—while also exploring alternative solutions. This moment will be especially meaningful for us, as Fa’ La Cosa Giusta is where Source International was born 20 years ago!

After Milan, they will return to Bolzano before setting off on another journey in early April, bringing their voices to new audiences across Italy. They will visit Milan, Turin, Verona, Pisa, and possibly Rome and Bologna—final dates to be announced soon.

The youth of Cerro fighting for their future

The discharge at the source of Tingo River

In July a delegation of Source International has travelled to Cerro de Pasco to meet the youth organization Red Interquorum Pasco and help them in their campaign for their future.

In Europe and all over the world the youth are organizing themselves to sue their governments about their inactivity on the front of climate change, a practice that goes under the name of climate litigation. The youth of Cerro de Pasco they also want to hold their government accountable but the problem there is not just the climate change. Climate change is real and concrete but the youth in Cerro de Pasco face something even more concrete and real: the mine! The pollution caused by the mine is denying them the right to a sustainable and healthy future and therefore the young generation of Cerro de Pasco is ready to take action!

In doing so the youth of Cerro de Pasco will be helped by the youth of Bolzano, a city in Italy where the students of the secondary schools (15 to 18 years old) will collect founds, organize events, and host a delegation of Pasco for three weeks in March, in collaboration with the local organization Operation Daywork. A sort of twinning between the two groups of young boys and girls. A twinning that can led the city of Cerro de Pasco to a new level of justice and a new level of wellbeing. And also it can lead the youth of Cerro de Pasco to make history in doing the first juvenile group (and the first group in general) to obtain such a rule in Peru and in Latin-America.

But in order to do so the youth group of Cerro de Pasco need some help. And here it comes Source International. This summer we spent two weeks in the city of Cerro de Pasco. We have presented the results of our previous studies, we collected more water samples and we also organized a workshop on legal and strategic activities in collaboration with the University Daniel Alcides Carrion and with the legal group EarthRights International. We socialized with the youth group and also a delegation of Operation Daywork from Bolzano come to Cerro de Pasco to meet the young activists and organize their visit to Italy. Yes! A delegation from Red Interquorum Pasco will come to Europe in March and they will spend an entire month traveling around to make their case visible!
