Dear GlobalGiving Supporters,
We’re delighted to share exciting updates on our forest conservation initiatives across Mesoamerica, with a special focus on the transformative work we’re doing in Guatemala and Mexico. Our efforts in these regions are making significant strides in preserving vital forest ecosystems while empowering local communities to actively participate in and lead conservation initiatives.
Empowering Communities through Payments for Environmental Services (PES)
Sarstún, Guatemala
In the Sarstún region, our ongoing efforts to empower communities and advance conservation have led to significant progress. In June 2024, five forest management plans were successfully approved, marking a major milestone in securing payments for ecosystem services. The community of San Juan received their first annual payments and we celebrated with a gathering of local authorities. During the event, community members expressed deep gratitude and reaffirmed their commitment to land conservation.
Under this program, the community will receive an annual payment of GTQ 2,700 (USD 344) per hectare for the first 15 hectares, with an additional GTQ 500 (USD 63) per hectare for any additional land, over the next 10 years. This incentive structure plays a crucial role in sustaining ongoing conservation efforts and providing vital financial support to the community.
Securing Funding for Forest Conservation
Oaxaca, México
With EcoLogic’s support through training and monitoring initiatives, the ejido of Vega del Sol in Santa María Jacatepec has successfully secured approval for a new PES funding proposal from the Mexican government. Initially uncertain about renewing their Conservation Program due to questions about the process and required commitments, the ejido has now embraced the opportunity with confidence.
Thanks to EcoLogic’s guidance, they are taking the lead in designing an updated Conservation Program, actively monitoring forest areas, and exploring innovative conservation strategies. This accomplishment marks an important step forward in their commitment to sustainable forest management and environmental stewardship.
On behalf of everyone at EcoLogic, thank you for being an integral part of our team. Your support is crucial to advancing our mission, and we are deeply grateful to have you with us on this journey.
With gratitude,
Barbara Vallarino, Executive Director
