I hope that your year is off to a wonderful start! I am delighted to share with you some recent updates about our community-based conservation work in Guatemala and the surrounding region.
As you may recall from my last update, in March 2023, we initiated a regional capacity-building process in Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. The goal has been to connect local communities with the necessary technology to respond to deforestation and fire events using early warning systems supported by Global Forest Watch. This past November, we facilitated an important learning exchange between our partners in Honduras and Guatemala, gathering and training 45 individuals in the use of drones and the ForestWatcher App for more effective forest monitoring.
Hugo, one of the participants, shared, “We are forest rangers from the community of Santa María Tzejá, in the Municipality of Ixcán, El Quiché, Guatemala. We learned how to use the Global Forest Watch platform to monitor the Cerro Cantil forest. We see that we carry out the work in a more targeted way since the application sends us alerts to our cell phones, guiding us to the location with provided routes. Additionally, we can record our routes, enhancing our monitoring capabilities.”
