By Mario Ardany de Leon | Guatemala Program Officer
Dear GlobalGiving Supporters,
I a delighted to share with you some recent updates about our community-based conservation work in Guatemala and regionally.
In the region of Totonicapan, we supported our local partner in the production of 145,000 trees in the 13 greenhouses of the 48 Cantones’ nursery over the last year. Of these, 90,000 trees have been distributed to community volunteers and associations for replanting in key degraded areas within the forest. The remaining trees continue to grow in the greenhouses until they are viable for planting.
Regional Initiative
With the support of Global Forest Watch, we initiated a capacity-building project starting in March 2023 to connect communities with needed technology to respond to deforestation and fire events with the help of GLAD and VIIRS early warning systems. Our local partners in Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala alongside local communities, are making strides in validating forest monitoring areas, identifying transects and priority hotspots, and utilizing drones and cell phones with the ForestWatcher app to make better decisions in the field and improving the efficiency of conservation work. To date, we have conducted 13 training workshops, sensitizing 406 people, and validated 10 monitoring areas.
It is donors like you who drive our mission. Without you, the impact we have together with rural and Indigenous communities in Mexico and Central America would not be possible.
On behalf of all of us at EcoLogic, thank you for being a part of our team! You are an essential part of our mission. If you would like more information on any of the areas mentioned above, don’t hesitate to reach out to me at mdleon@ecologic.org.
In solidarity,
Mario Ardany de Leon
Program Officer, Guatemala
