Your Support Protects and Restores Forests

Community reforestation campaign in Totonicapan

Dear GlobalGiving Supporter,

As the year comes to a close, we want to THANK YOU for your past contribution to conserve forests and support forest defenders in Guatemala.

Why does your support matter? Tropical forests are under pressure. The consequences of inaction are dire for climate change, the livelihoods of local communities, and biodiversity. Conserving standing forests and restoring degraded areas has never been more important. The invaluable role that indigenous communities play as guardians of the world’s forests has also been increasingly recognized and brought to the forefront.

Here are a few examples of what your support made possible in 2019:

  • In Totonicapán, Guatemala, we worked with our local partner, building two new greenhouses and repairing two existing ones to expand the reforestation capacity of the organization. Each greenhouse can produce about 16,000 trees/year. In total, 120,000 trees were produced and distributed to the community for reforestation.
  • In La Chinantla, Mexico indigenous families play a leading role in protecting their forest. Their vision is to keep these forests standing for generations to come. Yet every day they must balance livelihood needs with conservation as they make land-use decisions within their communal Ejido territory. With EcoLogic's support, these families are currently working to protect 15,000 acres of forests that they have voluntarily designated for conservation. Together with local partners and collaborators, we’re building the community’s capacity to measure and monitor forest cover change over time.
  • In Olanchito, Honduras, we have been supporting community monitoring brigades to conduct assisted natural regeneration over 950 hectares of the Uchapa-Pimienta watershed which has experienced severe degradation due to the pine beetle infestations and forest fires. activities have included: a) Community Monitoring, b) Fire Prevention, c) Weed control, d) Fire Control, e) Demarcation and signage, and f) Prevention and Enforcement Against Illegal Logging.

This holiday season, you can spread the #JoyOfGiving AND help EcoLogic win bonus prizes from @GlobalGiving to support our life-changing work. Can we count you in? EcoLogic’s solutions are meant to last. Our community-centered approach ensures that our work today will continue to generate positive outcomes far into the future, for generations to come.

In solidarity,

Barbara Vallarino, Executive Director
