Update from Relief International: Responding to the Sudan Regional Crisis

By Maryam Sheikh | Resource Development Coordinator

April 15 marked two years of relentless war in Sudan.

11.5 million people have been displaced, making this the largest internal displacement crisis globally, with children comprising over half of the displaced population (UNHCR).

Throughout this time, the Relief International team has continued our work with unwavering dedication — providing vital services to displaced populations in the most difficult of circumstances.

In many areas, such as North Darfur and Blue Nile, Relief International remained one of the few organizations still operating and providing critical healthcare at our network of facilities. In South Sudan, our mobile medical teams have provided emergency medical services to people crossing the border seeking refuge.

With the generosity and partnership of our global community, over the past several months Relief International has:

Delivered life-saving primary healthcare by:

  • Providing up to 300 consultations a daysupporting 46 health facilities across Sudan.
  • Providing antenatal care to over 12,000 mothers and babies in Sudan – including supporting safe deliveries and providing vaccinations to protect against measles and other deadly diseases.
  • Ensuring access to mental health and psychosocial support sessions for people displaced by the war in Sudan and in South Sudan.
  • Providing life-saving treatment to more than 1,500 children suffering from malnutrition. Our team also provided supplementary feeding to 4,900 children to prevent further cases.

Enabled access to water, sanitation and hygiene services by:

  • Providing clean, safe drinking water to over 20,000 people in Sudan, and over 200,000 people in South Sudan.
  • Repairing 175 water pipelines, flushing 57 boreholes, and supporting over 500 households in constructing latrines - benefiting over 4,000 individuals in South Sudan.

Provided protection and support to vulnerable women and children by:

  • Providing psychosocial support to over 2,700 children and conducting structured parenting sessions for over 2,500 parents in Sudan.
  • Supporting survivors of gender-based violence by establishing two women and girls’ safe spaces in Sudan with medical and psychosocial services.

Fostered food security and livelihoods development by:

  • Providing agricultural tools and seeds to 2,000 households in Sudan, with 900 households receiving food vouchers in early 2025.
  • Supporting individuals in developing skillsets by conducting vocational training in South Sudan across five trades: electrical wiring, plumbing, catering, cosmetology, and computer training.

The Relief International team has also experienced profound tragedy.

On April 11, a local armed group stormed a Relief International clinic in Zamzam camp, brutally killing nine of our brave colleagues. Since the attack, two more colleagues have also died from their injuries.

More than 300 innocent civilians—including women and children—are also reported to have been killed in the subsequent days of heinous violence.

Relief International was the last organization providing life-saving support in Zamzam camp, where over half a million people are surviving in desperate conditions. The siege has caused even more forced movement across North Darfur, as once again, families search desperately for safety.

Despite this unimaginable loss, Relief International remains committed to the people of Sudan.

With your continued support, we can continue to deliver life-saving healthcare and services to support the immense needs of individuals, families, and communities affected by the ongoing conflict. Thank you for standing with us.
