In late 2023 and early 2024, heavy rains and flooding severely affected communities in Kalemie, leaving 90 households headed by or including people with disabilities without homes. Many affected individuals face additional barriers to accessing safe shelter, clean drinking water, healthcare, food, and livelihood opportunities. The loss of essential mobility aids, including wheelchairs and crutches, has further complicated daily life for people who already face significant challenges. For these families, recovering from a disaster means more than rebuilding damaged homes; it means restoring dignity, independence, safety, and hope.
Our project aims to support people with disabilities affected by the floods through more accessible emergency assistance, protection, essential supplies, and opportunities for economic recovery. We are currently identifying qualified trainers and prospective learners while mobilizing the resources needed to begin implementation. The project has a total budget of $45,500, and $3 has been raised so far. Although implementation has not yet begun, this early contribution represents a starting point toward our goal. Once sufficient resources are mobilized, we intend to provide practical support tailored to the needs of affected households, strengthen community awareness of disability inclusion, and promote the participation of people with disabilities in decisions that affect their lives.
We are grateful to GlobalGiving for providing a platform through which our project can reach international donors and supporters who believe that no one should be left behind during a humanitarian crisis. Through this collaboration, we hope to expand our fundraising reach, attract new partners, and secure the resources necessary to turn our plans into meaningful assistance for vulnerable families in Kalemie. We recognize that reaching our $45,500 target will require continued commitment, and we remain determined to pursue this goal transparently and responsibly.
We invite individuals, foundations, companies, and humanitarian partners to support this initiative. Every contribution, regardless of size, can bring us closer to helping people with disabilities recover from the devastating effects of flooding. Your support can help make emergency assistance more accessible, protect people at heightened risk, and create opportunities for families to rebuild their lives with dignity. Thank you to our donors, to GlobalGiving, and to everyone willing to stand alongside people with disabilities in Kalemie. Together, we can work toward a more inclusive recovery in which every person has the opportunity to live safely and participate fully in community life.
