Summary

The prevalence of diabetes is on the rise in Nigeria. According to the International Diabetes Federation, Nigeria has the highest number of people living with diabetes. Specifically, there are currently 3 million people living with disease and these numbers are expected to continue to rise. We are working to turn these buildings into a health resource center so we can provide reliable health care and health education to the people living in nearby villages. Challenge

Chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension are on the rise in the rural areas of Nigeria where there is no or limited access to health care. Many dwellers die prematurely as a result of these diseases without being diagnosed, or when the diagnosis is too late due to the irreversible damages to the organs. According to records, 78% of Africans with diabetes are undiagnosed. There is a need for health education on these diseases and to teach those affected on how to self manage the disease.

Solution

ACHI has conducted health screenings and education sessions in the rural areas of Nigeria for the past six years. The maintenance program we embark on and the health education on chronic disease management has helped to control the blood glucose levels, and prevent complications with the diseases. We need a centeral place for classes and support groups, follow up appointments, and wound treatment for the citizens that are affected by chronic diseases and other ailments.

Long-Term Impact

The Resource center will serve several purposes in providing adequate care to people living with chronic diseases. By having the building we will be able to schedule classes to help individuals take control of their health, form support groups, make resources available, and provide follow ups with lab technicians. There will also be a wound care unit to help individuals that may have chronic disease related injuries (ex.diabetic ulcers).
