Empowering Communities Through Local Leadership Amidst the Impact of TY Gaemi and Southwest Monsoon
Engaging with local leaders is the strongest demonstration of trust in the ability of communities to shape their own path toward development and resilience. Humanitarian efforts become truly effective and impactful only when they acknowledge and support the strengths and agency of the affected population.
In collaboration with three community-based organizations, the Center for Disaster Preparedness Foundation successfully distributed relief packages to 2,008 families in Quezon City and Pasig City affected by Typhoon Gaemi. The distribution prioritized households in single-story homes within 50 meters of rivers and waterways and vulnerable groups such as solo parents, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. Each family received gender-sensitive hygiene kits and essential food supplies, including rice, canned goods, and mung beans.
By pooling resources from donors and partners, CDP Foundation also supported community-led responses for subsequent typhoons and heavy rainfall caused by the interplay of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), monsoon, and shearline. These efforts enabled locally driven humanitarian solutions, ensuring appropriate, timely, and sustained assistance for those in need. These locally-led actions also sought to address longer-term chronic hazards.
None of this would have been possible without the dedication of community leaders, who served as first responders, inspired volunteerism, and worked selflessly toward a shared goal. In recognition of their vital role, they were also provided with emergency go-bags, ensuring their safety and well-being as they continued their invaluable work.
