Childhood cancer and its treatment can have lasting effects on memory, concentration and planning skills. These difficulties can make school and everyday life more challenging. A research team led by Prof. Regula Everts at Bern University Hospital has developed a training app to support children and adolescents after cancer treatment.
The app, called Mio, combines thinking and memory exercises with physical coordination tasks. Children also learn strategies for solving problems and reflect on how they think and learn. The aim is to help them apply these skills beyond the training itself, for example at school. Since the exercises can be completed at home, the app could also make rehabilitation easier to fit into family life.
The researchers first tested Mio with 21 healthy children and adolescents. The participants completed 95 percent of the planned training, and their feedback on the app was positive. After learning specific memory strategies, they performed better on the corresponding exercises, including when their recall was tested later. However, progress in working-memory tasks varied considerably between participants.
These initial findings are encouraging, but they do not yet show whether Mio benefits children affected by cancer. To answer this question, the team is conducting a clinical study in which participants are assigned to either a training or comparison group. Ten of the planned 40 children and adolescents have been enrolled so far, and recruitment is continuing. The researchers also plan to explore a combination of digital training and therapist-led sessions, with the aim of helping children use what they learn in everyday situations.
Your donations are making a lasting impact. Thanks to supporters like you, researchers can explore new ways to help children manage the long-term effects of cancer treatment. Learn more about the research projects we support in the fight against childhood cancer.
