RESCUING OF 100 STIGMATIZED CHILDREN IN NIGERIA

Summary

In The Niger Delta region of Nigeria, thousands of children have been labeled as witches and wizards, tortured, and abandoned by their families and some religious preachers. The children bear scars and wounds of horrendous abuse and torture. Some of the children have been chained in the dark rooms, toilets, and prayer houses for months before being forced to the streets; and we want to rescue them.

Challenge

300 children who were branded as witches, made to undergo trials by ordeal to elicit false confessions of their purported involvement in the witchcraft practice that takes place in the coven are on the street and need to be rescued. Some of the children are either poisoned to death with a local berry called esere, starved to death, thrown in the river or taken to the forest and abandoned or slaughtered. The few rescued ones are, by and large, the lucky ones.

Solution

In the past few years, CRARN has already rescued thousands of such children and carried out enlightenment campaigns. We will rescue these children and take them to children's shelter where they will be safe, go school and become useful citizens. A case in point is a twelve-year-old girl who gave birth at a dump site in Uyo - Nigeria just two days ago and named the child Miracle. She and hundreds of others are still on the street as we file this information

Long-Term Impact

The children will become educated and the community will be saved from the nuisance emanating from the street and abandoned children. The community will be educated on the danger of stigmatizing and abandoning children.
