115 Dogs & Puppies Rescued from Hoarder Vega Alta

In the beginnning of May we were notified of an extreme hoarding case in Vega Alta, involving 115 dogs and puppies living in filthy, inhumane conditions. We have been working side by side with Animal Cruelty to relocate and get the veterinary care that these dogs so desperately needed. There were old dogs, young dogs, mothers with newborn babies stuffed into cages that are too small to move. No water, no food...the hoarder admitted to only sporadic feeding and watering...1-2 times perweek in the blazing Puerto Rican temperatures. Just barely enough to keep them alive and in many cases..not enough to prevent a suffering death.

It was so bad that it left the officers and our team in tears.

To date 12 of these dogs have recovered enough to fly to our NY shelter and have found homes! Many are currently in our PR shelter gaining weight and learning to live again. We have three extreme cases under veterinary "in-house" care with severely broken legs and one with a broken jaw. To imagine that they lay suffering in flea, tick and fly ridden cages, in their own feses and urine, with no food or water, in the heat with no hope is almost too much to fathom.

We NEED DONATIONS!! This is the biggest case we have ever worked and we need money for food, vet bills, crates, boarding, etc etc! We are determined to help these dogs no matter the cost but we NEED YOU to help!

At MINIMUM the cost will be $250 per dog. We have 115 dogs. It is a massive undertaking!!!
We are so grateful that we are working with Animal Cruelty investigators who want to see these poor animals get the care they need to eventually recuperate enough to find a home instead of euthanasia. They deserve a chance!!! Help us help them!

We are Making a Difference!

We have been very busy the past three months! Your donations have given us the opportunity to really head out on the streets and help without the constant worry of if we can afford to!

Since December 1st we have pulled more than 80 dogs and puppies off the streets. We have vetted, transported and successfully adopted 68 dogs and puppies into their new homes in the Western, NY area!

Part of our rescues day to day activity is watching the pleas for help on Facebook from fellow doglovers or independent rescuers in Puerto Rico who need help because they have no outlet to get the dogs they see to the mainland United States. One such plea really pulled at our heartstrings. A litter of very young puppies(no more than 4 weeks old), were abandoned in an unpatrolled area of Vega Baja Beach. A woman came across them while on the beach and begged for help. Angelys and Su went to that area of the beach and when they got out of their car literally hundreds of dogs of all ages came running from the trees to them hoping it was their chance. The litter of puppies was found and taken in along with 13 other older dogs that day. That evening it was found that the puppy shown in the original picture that caught our eye, was suffering from leptospirosis. She sadly passed away that evening only hours after her rescue. We were heartbroken but truly grateful that she died in the arms of love rather than alone on the beach. This strengthened our desire to help these forgotten dogs in the areas of Vega Baja, Toa Baja, Vega Alta and Toa Alta. We pulled a total of 17 that day and are determined to continue.

We have begun the construction of a safe outdoor area for our waiting dogs in Puerto Rico. They have currently been housed inside and don't get the opportunity to play in the fresh air. We are excited for our yard to be finished. It will be constructed of a large cement pad with chain link fencing that is easily cleaned and open air with an overhead tent to protect from drizzling rain or intense sun. We feel that outdoor play is essential to the health and wellbeing of a happy dog!

We are so grateful for all of the support we have received. We are working hard and using your donations wisely. You have all participated in giving over 80 daog and puppies a chance at a happy, healthy future. We can not thank you enough! We hope we are making you proud!
