This project will focus on the tremendous number of street dogs in Puerto Rico, particularly in the poorest sections of Toa Baja Beach, Vega Baja and Vega Alta. We will focus on this area to pull our goal of at least 200 street dogs suffering from neglect, abuse and abandonment, get complete veterinary care, transport to our facility in NY and find adoptive homes.
There are an estimated 600,000 street dogs(satos) in Puerto Rico. The number increases yearly and many organizations have stepped in to help with the growing number of suffering animals. There is currently no organization that focuses on the areas of Toa Alta, Toa Baja and Vega Alta. The dogs and puppies in this area are at risk of starvation, abuse, neglect and injury on a daily basis. They lack food and fresh water, shelter and human care. Our project will help more than 200 street dogs.
MAD (Make a Difference Rescue) provides nutrition, shelter and veterinary care to the street dogs in our rescue. They are completely vetted including vaccinations, health testing, spay/neuter, deworming as well as any other health procedures or behavioral training necessary to get them well enough to travel and ultimately be adopted.
This project will remove 200 dogs and puppies from the streets with a trickle down effect of decreasing the neglected population in the future by preventing unwanted breeding. This will prevent future generations of neglected dogs and reduce the increase of street dogs in these areas by the thousands. It will provide a healthful future for the dogs rescued and ensure a lifetime of care and well being.
