A Story from Karamoja: Saving Lokiru’s Tomorrow

When the rains failed in April 2026, the fields of Karamoja turned to dust. Families who once relied on sorghum and maize watched their crops wither. By July, hunger had become a daily reality. In one village, a young boy named Lokiru, just nine years old, had gone three days without a proper meal. His mother carried him to the nearest health center, weak and unable to stand.

This is not an isolated story. Over 38,000 children in Karamoja face the same fate—malnourished, out of school, and at risk of lifelong health complications. In just one week, 88 children and the elderly died in Rengen Sub County from hunger.

HELPCHILD KARAMOJA (HCK) stepped in. Through the Rescue Children from Hunger in Karamoja project, Lokiru received a bowl of fortified porridge and vegetables. Within days, his strength began to return. He smiled again, and his mother whispered, “Now he can SURVIVE.”

But HCK’s work goes beyond emergency meals. We are building community food banks, launching school feeding programs, and teaching families water harvesting and livelihood diversification. These strategies mean that Lokiru’s family—and thousands like his—will not only survive this drought but will be better prepared for the next.
