Rescue cats from being euthanized at local shelter

Rayne, the kitten missing 2 toes.

An urgent email was received from our local city shelter. They had been inundated with homeless cats, including 16 kittens dropped off in one day. The shelter's policy is this:

"All animals on urgent list are subject to humane euthanasia if not tagged and/or; health, behavior, or shelter space is compromised."

Such was the situation when our volunteers arrived at the shelter. Shelter space was indeed compromised. The cat room was so packed, there was no room for them to take additional cats without putting others to sleep. So many cats had been brought in they were filled beyond capacity. Most cages contained multiple cats and kittens. As usual, our awesome volunteers stepped up! Friday we pulled one cat on the Urgent List that had 2 of her toes amputated likely due to a rubber band being wrapped around part of her foot. Saturday we pulled out 13 kittens (one is missing a leg) and 2 adults, plus we stopped a man from turning in a litter of baby kittens and instead he brought them back home to continue nursing on the mom. There will be more follow up with his situation...but that's another story. So in total, NBCR saved 16 cats in a 48 hour time span from being euthanized.
