Of the many factors needed to successfully rescue cats; timing, available foster space and financial support are the driving force.
These beautiful cats and kittens were rescued by New Beginnings Cat Rescue from being euthanized at the local animal shelter.
Every day we receive an email advising us of the daily intake of cats at our local animal shelter and their evaluation date. The evaluation date signifies the date the shelter veterinarian will evaluate the animal and decide whether the cat is adoptable, a rescue only or unadoptable. Fairly often, we also receive urgent pleas from the shelter when they are at capacity or for animals who have become ill and need out of the shelter immediately.
When we have an adoption that frees up foster space or a new volunteer who wants to foster, we view the cats at the shelter whose time is up. We are generally only allowed to take the cats deemed rescue only. Once it is decided who we will be able to pull, we email the shelter with the animal's tag number we would like to rescue. If accepted, we receive a confirmation email back and a deadline of when to pick up the cat. From there, we then look for a volunteer who can transport the cat from the shelter to our veterinarian or the foster's home.
In addition to the time spent coordinating rescues and the required paperwork, the process is very emotional. It is challenging to see all of the animals who we aren't able to save and know they will likely have a different fate. The guilt is unbearable for many volunteers to participate in this part of the process. On the other hand, being able to rescue any animal is the best feeling in the world.
With your support, together, we are saving many cats from needlessly being euthanized. Thank you from the volunteers of New Beginnings Cat Rescue.
