SDG 4: "Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all" 10 years old Niru (Name changed) lived with her parents and brother in Sinamangal, Kathmandu. She and her brother studied in Shreedev Secondary School. Her mother lost her job when she became sick of a week. Her father was severely injured and could not continue his construction job. He partnered with one of his friend and bought a delivery van. However, the accident caused by his van put him on severe financial burden. Eventually, the family lost all means of income. This led them into desperate poverty. The family’s traumatic impact was seen in her education. She dropped-off from the school. 10 years old Niru ended up working in a hotel in Kathmandu. She had to face several abusive words and behavior from the employee every day. She was rescued from this abusive situation during the child labor house hold campaign of an NGO and Kathmandu Metro City Ward 9. She was referred into Bethany Vision Nepal’s shelter home by National Child Rights Council. During the case management process, it was found she can be restored into her family with education and psychosocial support. She was reunited with her family. She was admitted in Sarada Secondary School at grade 1. Our social worker continued distant follow up and family visits. She is living happily with her parents and sibling, with her rights to education ensured.
In last fiscal year, 57 family restored children into 17 districts of Nepal. Both distant and family visits were performed by our social workers. 37 children fulfilled case closure criteria during the fiscal year. Niru represents 54 other children who received education and psycho social support as a means fo prevention from re-victimizaiton.
3 beneficiaries successfully passed grade 10 with good grades. Their education progress and safety was closely monitored by our social workers. It is not only about supporting education, but also ensuring children’s rights to live with a safe family.
