The Apastepeque lagoon, provides water and livelihoods to over 100 families in 3 municipalities in the valley of Jiboa. Currently, it is contaminated and damaged by various human activities and the impact of climate change. This project will conduct actions to raise public awareness, land management plan and implement innovative initiatives for the fishing, agriculture and tourism activities undertaken by local families are sustainable. Mayors and youth groups in the territory will be involved.
The Apastepeque lagoon currently has three problems: 1) Water pollution by excessive use of agrochemicals by local producers; 2) Mismanagement of waste generated by communities and people visiting the area; 3) Impoverishment of land by burning practices to harvest sugar cane, and for planting basic grains. These problems have decreased water quality, increased poverty and limited opportunities for economic development of the local population.
1) Creating a Technical Committee which involved government institutions, NGOs, universities and local governments linked to the Apastepeque lagoon to work a management plan of the lagoon; 2) Transfer of seed capital to youth-led initiatives that implement innovations to overcome the problems of water pollution and land degradation; 3) Making awareness campaigns and dissemination of information to ensure that local people and visitors are actively involved in solving the problems identified.
1) The three mayors of the territory invest resources of their municipalities and signed a cooperation agreement for the rescue and conservation of Apastepeque lagoon with government institutions, NGOs and local communities; 2) 30 young people linked to the territory, implement 6 innovative initiatives to rescue and protect the Apastepeque lagoon; 3) Management Plan lagoon Apastepeque up; 4) 100 inhabitants of local communities, are involved in two cleanups and community awareness.
