The project will improve nutritional status of 12,533 rural children under five in two rural districts of Katakwi and Amuria, providing supplementary feeding and increasing coverage of appropriate Maternal Infant and Young Child Feeding practices to post war marginalized families. Acute forms of malnutrition in children even in homes with high food production indicative of poor utilization. In addition, 13% of Ugandan children are born with malnutrition indicative of maternal under nutrition.This contributes to high prevalence of chronic malnutrition in Uganda currently rated at 33% compared to the recommended rates of less than 20%. This project will promote breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices as well increase access to nutrition food to 12,533 rural child
This project will promote the use of biofortified planting materials such as Iron rich beans and Orange flesh Sweet Potatoes. In addition other nutritious crops such as soybeans and green leafy vegetables will be promoted. Food demonstrations will be conducted regularly to sensitize caregivers on recommended food preservation and preparation techniques. Pregnant and breastfeeding women along with their children will be encourage to have an adequate and balanced diet.Kitchen gardens inclusive.
The project will rescue 12,533 malnourished children from acute malnutrition and potential death. Households of this children will also rise from poverty and health complication as a result of improved access to and utilization of nutritious foods for children 6-24 months as well as pregnant, breastfeeding women. Referral for Vitamin A , Iron, Zinc supplementation as well as deworming fo children and pregnant women creates a sustained healthy families and improved education levels for children
