This quarter we report the progress on organic fertilizer construction. These are connected with the biogas from the cow-dung bio-digesters (which produces biogas as cooking fuel). We have just completed a project of construction of 300 organic fertilizer units sponsored by the United States Africa Development Foundation (USADF).

Project Outcome

  1. TAHUDE built 303 Organic Fertilizer Units out of the 300 that were planned
  2. TAHUDE is scaling up to other regions. It started in Arusha only; now it is in Manyara and Kilimanjaro regions. The beneficiaries with Organic fertilizers have increased (some doubled) their crop yield while significantly reducing the expenditure to commercial fertilizers; as demonstrated in the photos below and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJxIAzE8s80

Other notable results include:

  • About 1,800 beneficiaries were reached. Their health has improved because they cook with cleaner energy (biogas); no side-effects caused by smoke (pulmonary diseases, red eyes, etc).
  • The hygiene around the houses are highly improved because the cow-dung is now collected and introduced into the biodigesters for gas production and for harnessing the organic fertilizer
  • The reputation and publicity of TAHUDE has highly increased. It even got grant from the government of Tanzania (Tanzania Education Authority (TEA) under Skills Development Fund (SDF)) via Gongali Model Co.Ltd (for internship of 123 biogas technicians and training of 402 people in Gongali village and Njiro - Arusha)

Women and girls: More than 700 mothers and girls do not need to struggle to search for firewood. They normally spend about 2 hours every day - looking for firewood. Now they spend ZERO second! They just turn-on their biogas stove when they want to cook. Biogas system has a life span of about 50 years.
