Project Report | Mar 5, 2026
Kiwi the Scarlet Macaw

By Elsy Cabrera | Project Leader

Kiwi in its thankless confinement
Kiwi in its thankless confinement

Kiwi is a scarlet macaw born to fly over the jungle, but for years the sky was something he could only imagine.
He lived in a cage so small that he couldn't spread his wings. Constant confinement deformed his joints, weakened his muscles, and dulled the brightness of his plumage. His diet was poor, and little by little his body adapted to a life that should never have been his.

When he arrived at Tivú, he didn't just bring physical injuries. He brought silence.

During the examination, we understood something difficult: her wings could no longer sustain her in flight. The damage was permanent. But we also knew that there was still something we could give her back: well-being.
With a proper diet, medical care, ample space, and patience, Kiwi began to transform. Her feathers regained their color. Her gaze became curious again. She began to climb, bask in the sun, and vocalize once more.
Kiwi does not fly.

But she no longer lives locked up.
She no longer lives limited by abandonment.
She no longer lives in suffering.

Sometimes rescue does not mean returning to the sky. It means restoring dignity.
And today, even though her wings do not lift her up, her life does.
