Completion Report: Save Patients with Cancer in Venezuela

By Cinzia De Santis | Mrs

Introduction

The most recent report from the United Nations (December 2022) established that in Venezuela, 7 million people need humanitarian assistance (1). The same number of Venezuelans are now refugees in other countries of the region, as stated by Human Rights Watch (January 2023) (2). The restart of the negotiations in Mexico between the Government and the opposition at the end of last year to address the crisis in Venezuela is stalled. Therefore, much-needed support for 90% of the impoverished population hasn´t materialised.

The Venezuelan Observatory of Finance (OVF) (3)reported that the inter-annual inflation rate climbed 157%, and the accumulated rate stood at 111.8%.

The exodus of professionals from all disciplines continues. Hospitals that rely on junior doctors are now closing departments because there are insufficient specialists. An estimated 40,000 doctors have left the country since the beginning of the crisis in 2017, and the number will continue to grow in 2023. Almost 50% of specialised doctors have migrated to other countries looking for a better future.

Healing Venezuela’s mission is to alleviate the country’s humanitarian crisis through a series of programmes like the one we have sponsored since 2017 to cover the costs of expensive lab tests. To date, more than 300 patients have benefited from it. The programme is delivered by our partner on the ground, FUNDAVIDA, in association with BLAU Laboratory.

How the Programme Works

The sponsorship requests usually come from FUNDAVIDA as they have a waiting list of patients for whom we require high-cost tests, such as cancer, HIV and diabetes.

The criteria to sponsor the tests are as follows:

  • The patient is from a low-income background and can't pay for the tests
  • The test required is vital for screening, treatment and follow-up of serious illnesses

Impact

The project raised enough funds to sponsor two high-cost tests. Healing Venezuela will match the funds with two more
