This project will renovate 10 homes for victims of the August 2017 flooding and mudslides to provide safer living conditions and support 250 vulnerable girl children to enroll and remain in school.
Vulnerable communities in Freetown, including Regent, Kanikay, Kamayama, Lumley, and surrounding informal settlements affected by the August 2017 floods and mudslides that killed over 1,100 people and displaced more than 3,000, face severe housing insecurity and unsafe living conditions. Many families remain in informal shelters; while children are at high risk of dropping out of school due to poverty and instability. Moreover, women-headed and low-income households are most affected.
This project will renovate 10 homes for flood- and mudslide-affected families in Freetown, providing safer living conditions. Moreover, its will also support 250 vulnerable girl children with learning materials and other needs to stay in school. However, this combined approach improves household safety, reduces dropout risk, and strengthens long-term stability for affected families in Freetown, Sierra Leone
This project will create lasting improvements by providing safe housing and strengthening education outcomes for vulnerable families in Freetown. Renovated homes will reduce exposure to environmental and health risks; while sustained school participation for 250 girl children will improve literacy, skills, and girls' empowerment. Over time, this will help break the cycle of poverty, build resilience in disaster-affected communities, and promote long-term social and economic stability.
