Standing Alongside Burundi: Flood Relief and the Power of Everyday Resilience

By Overseas Team | Member of Overseas Team

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for your continued compassion and support for our work in Burundi. Today, we want to share an important update on our recent emergency relief efforts and reflect on the remarkable resilience of the communities we serve.

Navigating Compounding Crises

Burundi is a country facing multiple, overlapping challenges. According to the ND-GAIN Index, which measures a country's vulnerability to climate change and its readiness to adapt, Burundi ranks 173rd out of 187 countries. The reality of this statistic hits home every year between March and April, when Lake Tanganyika repeatedly overflows. These seasonal floods have devastatingly become a "routine" crisis, submerging surrounding areas and forcing families to evacuate their homes.

Beyond climate vulnerabilities, the daily lives of Burundians are heavily burdened by severe fuel shortages and high inflation. Furthermore, the scars of historical conflicts remain, and the country often receives far less international attention than its neighbors. Most recently, in February 2025, Burundi also welcomed tens of thousands of refugees fleeing renewed conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Our Collective Impact: Restoring Dignity

In the face of these daunting realities, we are proud to share that we have taken concrete steps to support those most affected. Throughout FY2025, in partnership with IOM Burundi and with funding from the Japanese government's supplementary budget, Terra Renaissance successfully distributed 500 dignity kits to families impacted by the devastating floods.

These kits are crucial for restoring basic hygiene, health, and a sense of dignity for people who have lost so much. We officially held our project completion reporting session on January 29, marking the successful conclusion of this specific intervention.

The Power of Everyday Resilience

When listing these endless challenges—climate disasters, economic instability, and regional conflicts—it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the state of the world. However, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

The people of Burundi do not live in despair, nor do they cling to unrealistic optimism. Instead, they possess a quiet, steadfast strength. They simply wake up every day and do exactly what they can, building their lives step by step. Watching them live with such grace and perseverance constantly reminds us of the importance of doing "what we can do right now."

Moving Forward Together

Inspired by the people of Burundi, Terra Renaissance remains deeply committed to walking alongside them. We believe in the power of taking steady, reliable steps forward together, rather than looking away when things get difficult.

We hope you will continue to watch over Burundi and stand with us on this journey. Your awareness and support mean the world to a country that is too often forgotten by the international community.

Thank you for being a vital part of our mission.

With deepest gratitude,

Terra Renaissance Team
