All of us at HALO would like to thank our generous donors for supporting our mine clearance work in Kosovo! Thanks to you, HALO has continued working hard to clear landmines and make land safe so that Kosovan communities can thrive again.
Sabit and his family are from Komogllavë, a densely populated village in south-eastern Kosovo. During the NATO bombings of 1999, Sabit and his wife Rabije fled the village with their family, leaving everything behind.
When the war was over, they returned home to find that their house had been burned down and their land and village had become contaminated with explosives. Due to the threat of what could lay underneath, Sabit and his family could no longer harvest crops in their land and worried about sending their children to school.
Once HALO began clearing the land in Komogllavë, Sabit and his family were able to rebuild their lives: “The day after HALO finished the sub-surface clearance, I plowed the whole land. I planted oats, as well as peppers, tomatoes, and other vegetables for my personal use.”
Sabit and Rabije were also able to re-build their house. Sabit said: “Your organization did a huge honor to my family. We have no fear anymore. Thank you very much to the organization and the donors for thinking of our wellbeing and safety.”
The benefits of mine clearance are tangible, and the cleared land can be used safely in perpetuity. Thank you for making stories like this possible! Together, we can transform the lives of many more in Kosovo.
