First Update: Safety Takes a Community

By Daniel Gamboa | Growth and Fundraising Director

Dear friends,

This is our first update from Relocate Refugee Families to Safety, and I want to begin with the most important thing: thank you.

This project is just starting on GlobalGiving, so this first report is not about a finished result. It is about what your early support helps make possible.

For a family forced to flee war, persecution, or violence, safety is not only crossing a border. Safety means having a legal pathway. A community ready to welcome them. Support with housing, paperwork, language, school, health care, and daily life. It means arriving somewhere and not being alone.

That is why community sponsorship matters.

Amnesty has helped strengthen this model globally by working with local communities, partners, and refugee leaders to make protection more concrete. A recent external evaluation of Amnesty’s Be There programme showed how community sponsorship grew from 2 to 19 countries, with more than 1 million people sponsored worldwide by 2025. In Argentina, this work helped strengthen refugee welcome pathways and showed that local communities can be part of the answer when governments and systems move too slowly.

Your support helps us keep that capacity alive.

At this early stage, donations help us do the careful work that has to happen before a family can rebuild safely: identifying urgent protection cases, assessing legal and practical needs, coordinating with partners, preparing community support, and keeping the emergency response capacity ready when time matters.

A refugee family does not only need to leave danger. They need to arrive somewhere safe, with people prepared to walk beside them.

Over the next months, we will use these reports to share progress honestly: what we are able to activate, what we are learning, and what support is still needed to help more families reach safety with dignity.

If you are one of the first people supporting this project, we would love to know: what moved you to give?

Your answer helps us understand how to tell this work with care and reach more people who believe that no family should be left alone when their lives are at risk.

With gratitude,

Daniel Gamboa
