Project Report | Dec 21, 2024
Relief/Recovery for Flood-Affected in Bangladesh

By Mahid Hossain Magfi | Project Leader

Executive Summary

Millions of people in Southern Bangladesh have been severely affected by flooding, especially in the districts of Feni, Comilla, Noakhali, and Lakshmipur. The devastating floods have claimed lives, displaced thousands, and caused extensive property damage. Pathway Bangladesh has responded promptly by providing immediate relief and initiating long-term recovery measures. This report outlines our efforts, achievements, and plans during the reporting period.

Key Achievements

1. Immediate Relief Provided:

  • Distributed 10,000 dignity kits to women and girls in affected areas.
  • Delivered dry food packages and drinking water to 10,000 families.
  • Supplied essential medicines to 15 community clinics and local health centers.
  • Set up 5 temporary shelters for evacuees in Feni, Laksmipur, Comilla and Noakhali.

2. Community Engagement:

  • Mobilized 130 local volunteers for relief distribution and rehabilitation.
  • Conducted 18 awareness sessions on health and hygiene during floods.

3. Long-Term Recovery Initiatives:

  • Initiated income-generating programs, benefiting over 325 families with tools, seeds, and microfinance support.
  • Repaired 8 community water sources and ensured safe drinking water access for 1,500 households.

Impact Assessment

Beneficiaries Reached:

  • 30,000 individuals (including 10,000 children and 8,000 women) have received immediate relief.
  • 1,200 families have started rebuilding livelihoods with our support.

Community Feedback:

Over 90% of beneficiaries expressed satisfaction with the timeliness and quality of assistance.

Challenges Faced

  1. Damaged Infrastructure: Roads and bridges disrupted supply chains, delaying relief distribution.
  2. Limited Resources: High demand for food and medicine strained available resources.
  3. Flood Awareness: Many residents lacked preparedness and knowledge about flood mitigation strategies.

Actions Taken:

  • Collaborated with local government to prioritize critical areas.
  • Launched a donation drive, raising an additional BDT 12 Lakhs.
  • Conducted training sessions on flood preparedness.

Future Plans

1. Enhanced Rehabilitation:

  • Expand income-generation projects to reach 2,000 additional families.
  • Build semi-permanent homes for displaced families.

2. Capacity Building:

  • Train 300 more volunteers for disaster response.
  • Develop a Flood Preparedness Guide for community distribution.

3. Infrastructure Support:

  • Repair embankments in partnership with local authorities.
  • Improve access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.

Conclusion

Pathway Bangladesh remains committed to supporting flood-affected communities. With the help of donors, volunteers, and stakeholders, we aim to strengthen our efforts, build resilience, and provide hope for a better future for those impacted by natural disasters.
