Typhoon rains arrived early into Sulu, Philippines this year. Flooding is bringing challenges for clean water and good hygiene in the communities Asia America Initiative supports.
AAI was able to utilize GlobalGiving donations to secure a 1,000 bars of soap to assist more than100 schools in the intensive rain and flooded areas after the new school year began in June. We are also coordinating with school nurses and more than 200 mini-nurses in elementary schools to teach the youngest children hygiene techniques and to prevent water borne diseases caused by mosquitos. We continue to spend GlobalGiving donations to purchase clinical supplies and to disinfect flooded classrooms. "The soaps and disinfectants donated by AAI and their donors have helped us to guard against illness and disease," says school nurse Khoy at Sheikh Mustafa Elementary School.
Asia America Initiative provides shelter, medical and food support to disaster survivors, especially in remote villages that are difficult to reach. We assist thousands of families, especially children, in desperate need of food, water and hygiene. "The more than 500 water containers [5 gallon] are filled with fresh filtered stream water and distributed at schools and centers for displaced families," says Teacher Sharifa in Indanan. "Our AAI team extends a lifeline through partnerships with courageous volunteers and professionals."
Currently, in Sulu Typhoon Vinta and recent cyclones have expanded our target population in 2018 of 10,000 people especially children. GlobalGiving has been a source of much-needed funding for the resources needed by Asia America Initiative to keep our lifeline active. Harsh rainstorms have initiated a severe monsoon season in Southeast Asia, especially in the Philippines. We sincerely thank all donors for your wonderful generosity.
