Relief for 1500 displaced families - Northern Iraq

by RED International

Across Iraq around ten million people need some form of humanitarian assistance. There are now around 1,146,000 Internally Displaced People (IDP) in the north (Kurdish region) of Iraq where our partner Operation Mercy is working. The majority of these people have been displaced since the ISIS (IS) surge out of the Anbar Province in 2014 and the continuing conflict in the region. These communities continue to have an urgent need for food and hygiene supplies.

Operation Mercy is working in the Dahuk Governorate in Northern Iraq which hosts an IDP population of 397,290 individuals or 66,200 families. The humanitarian situation in Iraq remains desperate with the armed conflict expected to continue for some time. The IPDs and refugees continue to face very difficult living conditions with 15,000 living outside of camps in informal settlements. These displaced families need basic food supplies and hygiene items to keep them healthy in the coming months.

Our partner's experienced staff will coordinate relief work among those in informal settlements in smaller villages which have been previously overlooked. They will provide relief supplies through local community organisations bringing relationally-based assistance serving those in need from different backgrounds, including Iraqi Christians, Yazidis, Kurds and Syrian refugees. Working with these groups the project aims to support around 6,000 (1500 families) displaced Iraqis & Syrian refugees.

Long-Term Impact

In all of these activities and processes Operation Mercy works according to the following values: professional excellence, being wise stewards, eager to coach, develop and empowering the local refugees and IDPs, building capacity, and building relationships to equip and train people to see lasting transformation. By supporting those living in these informal settlements in the coming months they will also be preparing them to be involved in longer term re-development work, once that is possible.
