Rebuilding Lives Relief and Rehabilitation for Cyclone Survivors(Sep 24)

By Md Enzamul Haque | Project Leader

Summary

A recent tropical cyclone hit the coastal region of Bangladesh, causing significant damage to homes, crops, infrastructure, and livelihoods. In response, PATHWAY launched a relief and rehabilitation project aimed at addressing the immediate and long-term needs of the affected communities. This report provides a summary of our key achievements, challenges, and future plans.

Project Overview

Bangladesh, being cyclone-prone, often faces the destructive impacts of tropical cyclones. This project was designed to help thousands of families who suffered due to the cyclone. The cyclone caused widespread destruction, leading to food insecurity, water scarcity, and loss of livelihoods. Many families were left without shelter and basic necessities. PATHWAY aims to alleviate the suffering by providing food, water, medical care, and rehabilitation support.

Key Achievements

Since the start of the project, we have focused on delivering essential aid and rehabilitation to the victims:

1. Food and Water Distribution
• Clean drinking water was supplied to thousands of people, addressing the severe water shortage in the cyclone-hit areas.
• Rations, including basic food items such as rice, lentils, and cooking oil, were distributed to affected families.

2. Medical Kits and Health Support
• Medical kits were distributed to the victims, including first aid supplies and hygiene products to prevent disease outbreaks.
• We set up health camps to provide medical care for injuries and illnesses caused by the cyclone.

3. Temporary Shelters and Rehabilitation
• Temporary shelters were constructed for displaced families, providing them a safe space to stay as their homes are being rebuilt.

4. Psychosocial Support
• Children and women, who were most affected by the trauma of the cyclone, received psychosocial support. This included counseling sessions to help them cope with the mental strain and violence they were exposed to.

Case Study: A Survivor’s Story

Asma, a resident of the cyclone-hit area, lost her home and means of livelihood due to the storm. She, along with her three children, sought refuge in a temporary shelter provided by PATHWAY. With access to clean drinking water, food, and medical care, Asma’s family managed to survive the aftermath. The psychosocial support offered to her children helped them recover from the trauma caused by the cyclone.

Challenges Faced and Solutions

One of the major challenges was the inaccessibility of certain remote areas due to destroyed infrastructure. Despite these difficulties, PATHWAY, in collaboration with local authorities and volunteers, managed to clear pathways and ensure that relief reached the most isolated communities. Additionally, the water contamination crisis posed a serious threat, which was mitigated by providing clean drinking water and hygiene products.

Impact Assessment

Our project has had a significant impact on the lives of those affected by the cyclone:

• Number of Families Assisted: Over 148 families benefited from the relief provided.
• Water and Food Distribution: Clean water and food were delivered to more than five thousands of individuals.
• Medical Kits Distributed: Hundreds of medical kits were handed out to families in need.
• Psychosocial Support: Over 1000 women and children received counseling services.

Next Steps and Future Plans

While we have made significant progress in providing immediate relief, the focus is now on long-term rehabilitation:

• Reconstruction of Homes: Plans are underway to rebuild cyclone-resistant homes for affected families.
• Restoring Livelihoods: We are helping to restore the income sources of affected individuals, particularly those dependent on agriculture.
• Improving Disaster Preparedness: By providing education on cyclone preparedness and improving infrastructure, we aim to build resilience within these communities.

Financial Overview

We are committed to maintaining financial transparency. Overview of our spending are given on the attachment.

Acknowledgments

We extend our deepest gratitude to our donors, volunteers, and local partners who played an essential role in making this relief and rehabilitation project successful. Without your continued support, these efforts would not have been possible.
