Abo Samra - Rehabilitation of Al Hallab Public Garden and establishment of a children's playground is a community-led initiative under the Tripoli Peace Initiative, funded by the United Nations' Peacebuilding Fund and implemented by IOM with SHIFT and the Municipality of Tripoli. The project aims to rehabilitate a public park to create a safe, inclusive public space that encourages community interaction and social cohesion.
The lack of regular maintenance and essential amenities such as seating, lighting, pathways, and sanitation has led to the underuse of public gardens in Abu Samra. As a result, residents, particularly families and children, have limited access to safe and functional outdoor spaces. In a high-density urban context, this exacerbates overcrowding in remaining public areas and negatively impacts quality of life, social interaction, and environmental comfort.
Rehabilitating public gardens through improved maintenance and the provision of basic facilities is essential. This includes upgrading landscaping, installing seating, lighting, waste bins, and play or recreational elements, and ensuring accessibility and safety. Establishing a regular maintenance plan and involving the community in stewardship efforts will help sustain the gardens' functionality and appeal.
In the long term, well-maintained and properly equipped public gardens will provide residents of Abu Samra with accessible, safe, and welcoming spaces for recreation and social interaction.
