Rehabilitate 370 Prisoners in Trichy, India

Poovammal is an inmate of the special prison for women in Trichy. Her husband’s name is Sudalai. Both are agricultural labourers. Poovammal got loan from the money lender. She is not able to pay the loan regularly. So the money lender came to their home and shouted at them using vulgar words. They got tensed and beat the money lender. He got severe injury and the police filed a case against both Poovammal and her husband Sudalai. They got punishment for 4 years. She completed her 3 years punishment.

It was in the prison, she met the counselor of New Life who visited the prisoners. She narrated her story to the counselor and was sharing her worry about her future once she gets out of the prison. She was counseled to undergo the livelihood training given by New Life.

New life conducted Sambrani (incense powder) stick making program. The training included the curriculum of making the incense powder sticks.  The trainees were introduced to the raw materials used, where to purchase the raw materials and market it. A hand on training was given to make the stick.  She attended the training with utmost interest.  Poovammal will be released in one year and she says she will take up this as her livelihood option.

A Candle making training was organized by New Life from 30^th January 2012 to 4^th February 2012 for inmates of the Special prison for Women in Trichirappalli district, Tamil Nadu. The programme was inaugurated by Ms. Jayabharathi, superintendent of Special prison for women, Trichirappalli. 29 young and interested inmates were selected and training was given to them.

The curriculum of the training includes motivating the inmates, raw materials to be used, method of melting the wax, inserting the thread, demonstration of making the candle, hands on training on making the candle, front and back end tie ups available.

After the release the trainees can earn Rs. 200/- per day if they start doing this income generation activity. All the trainees are happy since the training is easily learnable and requires fewer skills. They are also happy that the capital required is very less and that they can earn on their own and can be independent.

Mrs.Sowndaram is going to be released in the month of June 2012. She was much interested in this training. She was arrested for her brother’s daughter suicide. She is in the prison as a lifer. Her husband’s name is Pandiyan. He is no more. She has one son; she tried to marry her brother’s daughter (Priya) to her son. But she refused to marry him. Sowdaram got annoyed and scolded her using vulgar words. Priya could not bear the words and she committed suicide.

Priya’s mother gave complaint against Sowdaram on the basis that she is the reason for Priya’s suicide. In this case she got imprisonment as lifer.  Her son is married now and he is not even willing to see her.

New life conducted Candle making program. Sowdaram will be released soon and she says she will take up this as her livelihood option. She is confident of earning a minimum of Rs.150 per day.
