Helping Children with Disabilities Thrive at Home

For children living with disabilities, rehabilitation is not only about what happens in a health facility. It is about whether a child can eat safely, communicate with their family, participate in everyday activities, and develop to their fullest potential.

Through our rehabilitation project, caregivers have gained practical knowledge and skills they can use every day at home. Early results are encouraging: caregivers reported greater confidence in caring for their children, and many observed meaningful improvements in feeding, communication, and participation.

What Your Support Is Making Possible

The project focuses on strengthening caregivers as partners in their children's rehabilitation. Rather than relying only on specialist services—which can be difficult for families to access regularly—caregivers learn simple, practical approaches that can be incorporated into everyday life.

During the project, caregivers reported learning how to:

  • Improve feeding: Caregivers learned appropriate feeding techniques to help children eat more safely and effectively.
  • Manage saliva: Families learned practical saliva-management strategies that can be incorporated into daily care.
  • Support communication: Caregivers learned ways to encourage communication and interaction, helping children express themselves and participate more actively.
  • Provide rehabilitation at home: Families gained skills to continue rehabilitation activities at home rather than depending entirely on visits to health facilities.

These skills are particularly important for families who face financial and geographic barriers to accessing specialist rehabilitation services.
