Mother’s Day is usually a warm, joyous occasion for families. But for Auntie Mei-Mei, a quiet afternoon in the kitchen turned into a life-changing tragedy. While cooking, hot oil suddenly splashed across her body, inflicting second-degree burns over 12.5% of her face, chest, and hands.
Initial wound healing felt like the final step. However, as hypertrophic burn scars began to form and contract, Mei-Mei realized her true journey toward rehabilitation was just beginning.
Overcoming Social Anxiety and Burn Scar Stigma
"My scars make me look like a patchwork doll—broken and unsightly," Mei-Mei shared softly.
Before her injury, Mei-Mei loved dressing up, spending time with friends, and exploring outdoors. After the burn accident, fear held her captive inside her home. When therapists told her she needed a custom pressure garment and mask to manage scar proliferation, anxiety set in:
"How can I step outside looking like this? What will people think when they see me?"
At Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation, dedicated social workers and occupational therapists guided Mei-Mei through the crucial role pressure garments play in long-term scar recovery. Alongside non-judgmental emotional support and steadfast encouragement from her husband, Mei-Mei found the inner strength to wear her pressure garments and step out into the world once more.

Embracing Every Patch: A Story of Transformation
Over the past year, Mei-Mei didn't conceal her scars; she stitched her life back together thread by thread. Her physical scars have transformed from painful reminders into symbols of resilience and courage.
Her social worker reflects:
"Walking beside Mei-Mei through initial frustration, emotional vulnerability, and back to joy has been deeply inspiring. Her story proves that inside each burn survivor lies a unique spark capable of lighting the way through life's darkest moments."
