Dear GlobalGiver,
In Nepal, September 14th marks National Children’s Day, a holiday celebrated with lively competitions, performances, and other special events across the country. The children of Hamro Ghar worked tirelessly to perfect a folk dance routine to perform at a Children’s Day competition. Dressed in beautiful costumes, the dancers – all former “carpet kids” – wowed the audience to enthusiastic applause and took home second place.
After receiving her prize, one of the dancers bounded up to a local GoodWeave staffer. She would have never dared to dream such a thing before it came true.
After National Children’s Day, GoodWeave kicked off the Dashain festival season – Nepal’s biggest holiday – by delivering gifts to the children at Hamro Ghar. Some children were able to safely return to their home villages to visit their families for the holiday, but those who stayed at Hamro Ghar each received new clothes, a backpack, community photos, and new shoes, which elicited smiles from ear to ear.
The past few months have been busy for the Hamro Ghar community, with 67 children residing at the facility at times. Regardless of how long a child stays – weeks or years – each child receives personalized medical and mental health support, academic instruction designed to quickly bridge the educational gap resulting from years on a loom, as well as food, shelter, and other necessities for the duration of their stay. And, of course, dance classes (for those who are interested)!
Your generous support is helping to not only achieve dreams, but create them in the first place. Inspiring former child laborers to dream big is Hamro Ghar’s mission, and you help make those dreams – of dancing, reading, writing, adding, subtracting, jumping, laughing – really happen.
We hope you enjoy these updates, and encourage you to keep up with GoodWeave’s work via our website, sign up for our newsletter, “like” us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter.
With gratitude,
Nina Smith
