For nearly 30 years, GoodWeave's "Hamro Ghar" has woven a new narrative for child labor survivors in Nepal: one where freedom and education replace labor and exploitation. Hamro Ghar, which means 'Our Home', is a rehabilitation center for children removed from carpet factories in Kathmandu. Here, they are provided with a safe and comfortable environment to overcome trauma, restart their education, and rebuild their lives with GoodWeave's support. For them, Hamro Ghar is a second chance at life.
Child labor survivors in Nepal risk never recovering from trauma and start working again if not provided with proper rehabilitation. Thousands of children toil for 18-hour days in carpet factories in hazardous conditions, suffering unspeakable abuse. When removed from labor they need a safe place to heal, psychological support, and access to an education. However, these children are often orphans or their families cannot provide for them. Rehabilitation efforts in Nepal fall below needs.
When child laborers are removed from carpet factories by GoodWeave, they are provided with a safe home at Hamro Ghar. There, they can learn, laugh, play, and experience the childhood they deserve. Their education is fully sponsored and a special "acceleration program" helps them catch up with their learning levels. They also play sports and do art. Hamro Ghar allows children to reintegrate into society and mainstream school. The program is led by a former child labor, now a manager at GoodWeave.
GoodWeave's Hamro Ghar will provide rehabilitation to over 40 child labor survivors. The impact of the program is profound: many children we supported in the past have gone on to attend secondary school or vocational training after being in the care of Hamro Ghar. Often, they are the first in their family to receive an education and to access better job opportunities as a result. This can change the future of their whole family for the better.
