Rehabilitate Bereba Library to honor David Pace

The team of FAVL's partner in Burkina Faso, Friends of Village Libraries of Burkina Faso/ABVBF, after meeting with communal authorities in July and August 2024, has worked with the authorities to hire and train a librarian for the libraries of Bereba and Dimikuy and they are now open. (They were closed for about 4 years due to terrorist attacks in Bereba and surrounding villages.)

The manager of the community library of the village of Dimikuy in the commune of Béréba, as part of the promotion of reading for the benefit of the communities of the said village, initiated an "doors open" day on November 15, 2024. He invited, with the support of the CVD president of Dimikuy, a group of women and a group of men. The manager, after welcoming them, explained to them what a library is, its usefulness, its role and its importance, the opening hours, its operation etc. He invited them not only to read but also to direct their children to go to the library and to read because it is in everyone's interest. The participants welcomed this great initiative which allowed them to better understand the library and its importance for their community. They promised that their children will frequent this very useful knowledge space.

Also, on October 29, 2024, an ABVBF team composed of the president and the library facilitator made a working visit to the community libraries of Béréba and Dimikuy in the commune of Béréba. The visit began at the Béréba library and ended at the Dimikuy village library. During the visits, the team noted the tremendous work done by the two new librarians. Indeed, they arranged the documents according to the information received during their training on library tools and management. Then, the managers are motivated and love what they do. The president congratulated them for their hard work and commitment. He also made suggestions to improve the service. Finally, the ABVBF team and the two managers met with the president of the special delegation of the commune of Béréba. With him, the president took stock of the visits and the work carried out by the managers. The president of ABVBF suggested to the PDS to see with the parents of high school and middle school students if they can not only invite their children to visit the libraries but also pay for a few books in the program for the two libraries.

Team has signed protocol with communal leadership

The team of FAVL's partner in Burkina Faso, Friends of Village Libraries of Burkina Faso/ABVBF, met with communal authorities in July and August, and signed a protocol of cooperation. In September the libraries of Bereba and Dimikuy will be rehabilitated. We hope then soon to continue to offer improved services.

The President of the special delegation of the commune of Béréba and the president of the association of Friends of Village Libraries of Burkina Faso/ABVBF, signed on July 19, 2024, a partnership memorandum of understanding for the management of libraries in Béréba and Dimikuy which the said Municipality benefits from. As a reminder, the members of the special delegation of the municipality of Béréba adopted the partnership protocol of understanding between the town hall and ABVBF during their ordinary session held on June 26, 2024. This protocol aims to facilitate cooperation between the town hall and ABVBF for the promotion of reading and libraries within the said municipality. Indeed, the municipality of Béréba has benefited, since 2001 and 2008, from two community libraries thanks to the financial support of FAVL, a privileged partner of ABVBF. For various reasons, these were closed more than five years ago. These libraries are public places and are open to all. In the days to come, reading lovers will be able to return to their libraries. After signing the protocol, the Secretary General of the town hall accompanied by the president of ABVBF and the facilitator of the ABVBF libraries, went to visit the Béréba library. They were able to see that the documents were still intact, except that they were covered in dust. As for the building, it has some cracks and internal painting that needs to be redone. The president of ABVBF thanked the first officials of the town hall for their commitment to supporting the communities of the commune for their intellectual development, imperative for any development.

Meetings with local officials to reopen library

Meeting in Bereba

Here is the translated summary of the April meeting of an ABVBF team (FAVL partners) with the PDS and SG of the commune of Béréba. As part of the relaunch of the reopening of the libraries of Béréba and Dimikuy, a team from the association Friends of Village Libraries of Burkina Faso (ABVBF) visited the town hall of Béréba. This mission aimed to meet the first officials of the Béréba town hall, in particular the president of the special delegation/PDS and the secretary general/S G, and to discuss with them in order to find a way to reopen the said libraries. This exchange meeting kept all its promises. At the start of the meeting, the president of ABVBF Sanou Dounko gave a summary of the general situation of libraries. Then, he focused particularly on the difficulties which caused the closure of the two libraries and the various processes initiated for their reopenings which ended in failure. It should be noted that it is with an attentive ear that the PDS and the SG listened to the president of ABVBF. They felt very upset by the situation because it means delay for the village and in particular for the students. Thus, the PDS and the SG asked the ABVBF president to agree together to take up the challenge. To do this, the president of ABVBF proposed the idea of signing a partnership memorandum of understanding between the town hall and ABVBF which will facilitate the reopening of the two libraries. At the end of this first meeting, 3 points were proposed:
- Develop a partnership memorandum of understanding for the monitoring and management of the two libraries.
- Develop a recruitment notice for a library manager.
- ABVBF takes care of the monthly motivation of the manager from June to December 2024 to allow the municipality to provide a line in the municipal budget. The PDS and SG say they are very satisfied with this meeting not only because they have more information on the two libraries, but also, the reopening of these two libraries will further boost the education of the children of the Béréba commune.

FAVL is hopeful this agreement will move forward. The security situation in Bereba has greatly improved and there have been no new attacks in the village since November 2022.
