Introduction

Homelessness impacts on both the individual and the community. By turning someone's life around, you are able to assist their children, their family and friends, and the extended community being impacted by homelessness. Published figures show that over 14,000 people sleep rough on the streets of Cape Town, we know this number is much likely to be much higher and since COVID-19 and with our energy crisis and job loss resources show a huge spike in homelessness.

Report

Graduates from the programme leave the programme by looking for and securing an independent job. With the rise in homelessness since the pandemic, we have also seen a need for a new shelter to assist and provide training to an increased number of individuals. We have managed to raise $2900 for this project so far.

Thank you for your support

Introduction

Published figures show that over 14,000 people sleep rough on the streets of Cape Town, we know this number is much likely to be much higher and since COVID-19 resources show a huge spike in homelessness..

Report

This project addresses the immediate issue of homelessness in Cape Town while being a sustainable project tackling the social issues that lead people to homelessness like poverty, inequality, quality education, and decent work. Our phased program has a track record of over 80% of homeless graduates remaining sober and employed and we hope to increase our reach with your help! A donation of $20 provides 10 meal vouchers to people on the street.

In South Africa life is a bit different to what you might know....

We park our car on the side of a road or in a car park and a 'car guard' usually a homeless person will watch your car and in return you will give them 5 rand ($0.25). It's one way homeless are trying to make money but then you have thousands of others living around the city and begging at the traffic lights, tourism before COVID was big here and people used to give handouts. But what happens to these handouts? Usually drugs or alchol, so giving money is not a good idea we need to change it

Our partners in South Africa run a voucher program, you want to buy a voucher for 10ZAR and give it to the homeless rather than give them cash, they bring the voucher along to our centre and exchange it for a hot meal or item of clothing from the second had shop. While on site our trained care workers try to get them to join our program where they move into our centre, go through rehab and once clean join the skills program and will graduate with a job. We have hundreds of success stories.

Unfortunately the 10 rand vouchers don't cover the program and that is why we need your support too, together we can change the future. We currently have 15 people on the program and this isn't capacity, it's money.

The number of people coming through the doors is amazing, people out there want to change, want to kick the addiction and want to take control of their life again, they just need the help to take the first step and that is why we are here!

Thank You

To be sustainable we need to shift beyond short term solutions and support people on a pathway out of homelessness. We have managed to raise $928 so far and the project has managed to graduate 73% of their champions so far which is an incredible achievement.

Report

A phased program that starts from Step 1 providing basic needs and change-readiness, moving to step 2 that is our drug and alcohol rehabilitation stage and then finally moving to step 3 that is skills and employment training for residence. Graduates from the programme leave the programme by looking for and securing an independent job. With the rise in homelessness since the pandemic, we have also seen a need for a new shelter to assist and provide training to an increased number of individuals. We have managed to raise $428 so far but still have a long way to go to reach our target. $15 will provide skills training for one person for one month.
