Our volunteers played a surprising role to the entire stakeholders in this project. We were excited to them at the particular correctional centre that we had earlier booked to visit. Our surprise was inspired by the determination shown by beating the heavy rainfall that started the previous night and rained hours into our scheduled time of visit. Eventhough they were not allowed entry into the main living areas of the center, they were waiting patiently at the lounge for our arrival which was minutes less than two hours. On our way to the Abia correctional centre, we accidentally drove into a ditch on an un tarred terrain. It took us time to go hire a truck to pull our vehicle out of the deep ditch.
After exchanging pleasantries with our volunteers and stakeholders, we were allowed entry into the living area of the inmates. Some of the inmates were seen privately practicing carving, weaving reading while others were engaged in other sports activities.
On this special visit we had earlier informed them about, we bought different items from the normal. This time around, we added electric clippers for each and every one of them with their names inscribed in them. Special arrangements were made for the safety of all by handing them over to the caregivers who were instructed to issue them weekly under enhanced supervision in other not to use them for other purposes. Apart from seeing them daily, this special visit was utilized by our Moral Instructors to access them separately and differently. On a sudden assessment, a number of them could recite the 12 Golden rules they were taught. The 12 Golden rules are rules devised to help change the psyche of the inmates to becoming better individuals. It points out the purpose of work and how to work and how to relate with people honestly. On this special visit, both the officers, workers of C4HDI, volunteers and stakeholders were impressed. It'll be recalled that we invite volunteers monthly to give an independent assessment of the inmates vis a vis our training and teaching of the inmates.
On this day, we all had a light supper together at about late evening after preparing our reports of visit. One constant indicator of all the reports is the need to hire a farmland where practical farming can be performed by those inmates who have been undergoing teaching on various farming techniques for livestock and plant farming. C4HDI is currently negotiating for different farmlands in different locations where the discharged inmates can also gain employment. Our plan is to produce marketable foods from these farmlands to help greatly sustain our project
