Barakat Inc. currently has 10 girls in the High School Scholarship Program in Pakistan.
Of the girls who had originally started, one - Bibi Hajjar - has graduated 12th grade. 2 girls dropped out because their families moved back to Afghanistan.
4 girls dropped out after one year of schooling; 1 girl dropped out after two years of schooling. All these girls were forced to do so by their families who needed them at home to help out with work and/or were planning to get them married in the near future and did not want them to be attending school prior to their marriages as it does not look good!
3 of the original girls are continuing and 7 more have joined our program.
It is our intention to support them both emotionally and financially as they struggle through their high school journey. At the same time, it is important to acknowledge that these girls are part of large family networks of Afghan Turkmen refugees in Pakistan and family attitudes are conservative.
We hope you will continue to donate to our program. We have started a program similar to this one in Afghanistan (for girls pursuing midwifery/nursing after High School) which has a much greater percentage of success.
