Continuing study for High School Girls

By Dr. Arti Pandey, Ed.D. | Director

All 9th and 10th grade scholarship candidates have cleared their examinations. However, not all of them plan to continue. Please see below for an explanation of each:

1. Shukriya d/o Usman is promoted to Grade 10 and she will continue her studies

2. Mohiya will similarly continue her studies in Grade 10

3 & 4.Marzia and Shakooria d/o Abdullah have moved to Afghanistan with their respective families. This does not imply that the male bread-winners of the family have also moved. In all likelihood, only the extended family of females has moved with a few male members; while others remain to continue working in Pakistan.

5. Samina has passed 10th grade and taken admission in Govt. College for Women, Attock, in 11th grade.

6. Zakia will also continue to grade 11.

7. 8. & 9. Shadia, Hameeda and Nazish have quit studies due to their family's decision. This is often the case. Having reached 10th grade, the family clamps down on further attempts by their girls to study.

The program continues to be challenging and we will, going forward, attempt to recruit girls from varied Afghan ethnic refugee groups. The Turkmen, who we work with, are remarkably conservative. Being in Pakistan as immigrants has caused many of them to become even more so and retreat further into their shell. The girls are, of course, the first to fall in this hurry towards conservatism that is presented in the form of 'maintaining their traditions.'

We will attempt to recruit Afghan refugee girls from different ethnic groups, some of who are more inclined towards girls' education. At the same time, we will continue to work with the Turkmen and with the population that is attending the Barakat schools in Pakistan.
