This project will provide alternatives to refugees and the host communities alongside Virunga National Parc in order to reduce de current deforestation of the Parc, On top of that this project will explore other livelihood options and develop talents and skills of refugees and the host communities. This project seeks also to change the image of refugees and make them reliable actors in the development.
Over the years refugees have lived alongside Virunga National Parc and have created negative impact as they are cutting trees in the Parc to make charcoal which sold in Goma as the main source of energy in order to cook. This activity also helps refugees to live and respond to their basic needs, this has severe consequences on environment and the whole issue of climate change currently, and at the same presents refugees as problem.
We are going to produce charcoal from the remains of the trees which were cut over the years, and this will help refugees to continue having income through this skill without affecting the forest. The project seeks to recycle the remains of the charcoal which are found in many places and make them more useful in order to reduce pressure on Virunga National Parc. But also this will seek to plant trees in areas that have been destroyed over the years.
In long term this will have positive impact on the climate, sauvegard Virunga National Parc and have in place various alternatives for livelihood activities and that will restore the glory of the whole Parc which in the International Patrimoine
