On Larapan Island in Semporna, Sabah, the local community has been actively meeting to discuss and refine their Community Protocol. This is a document that reflects the local community's rights, customs and role in managing their own marine resources while ensuring their traditions do not get lost in the process. Several sessions, incorporating discussions and trainings have been held to refine the protocol. A couple of weeks ago, members of the Larapan Marine Conservation Group (LMCG) and the local Community Protocol Committee came together in a follow-up workshop, building on discussions held late last year. With support from partners and facilitators, the session focused on shaping something that is both practical and truly grounded in the community’s voice. Beyond the workshop, the gathering also created space for cultural exchange, with traditional food, dance and storytelling shared among participants.
Recently, community members took another step forward in developing their Community Protocol. In collaboration with Institut Marin Borneo (IMB), UMS, we conducted a comprehensive training session. Two experts led a hands-on training on fish biomass surveys and coral diversity assessment. From learning how to estimate fish abundance to identifying coral through their growth forms and structures, participants gained practical skills to better understand the reefs around them.
The training strengthened the capacity of the Larapan Marine Conservation Group, equipping the community with the knowledge to independently collect reliable data on their reefs. This will support upcoming biodiversity monitoring and help establish baseline data for Larapan Island, an important step in guiding the community’s conservation efforts.
