This proposal outlines a strategy to reduce the recurrence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) by promoting couple-oriented screening. Our approach moves beyond treating individual patients to a model that engages both partners, thereby breaking the cycle of reinfection and improving public health outcomes.
A primary driver of persistent STI infections, particularly among pregnant women, is the treatment of only one partner. When a woman is treated for an STI during an antenatal care (ANC) visit, her untreated partner can easily reinfect her. This cycle of reinfection can lead to serious health complications for the mother, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and long-term risks for newborns. It also undermines the effectiveness of public health efforts and erodes family health.
We propose a multi-pronged initiative to integrate couple-oriented STI screening into existing health services; building on shared responsibility and collaborative health management. We will integrate couple-oriented STI screening into key service points: Antenatal Care (ANC), Outpatient Department (OPD), Community Outreach. Our initiative will be supported by three core pillars, Counseling, Mobilization and confidentiality.
By breaking the cycle of reinfection, this initiative is expected to produce significant, lasting benefits: Reduced STI Recurrence: Treating both partners simultaneously will dramatically lower the rate of reinfection. Improved Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes: Healthier mothers lead to healthier pregnancies, reducing complications and improving the well-being of newborns and strengthened Family Health
