A Thermos of Tea, A Life Transformed

By Paula Murira | Communications Officer

When CHAT nurse Ann arrived in the remote Kirimun community five years ago, she could never have imagined how deeply her work would touch lives. Recently, a woman named Nakini handed her a thermos of hot tea — a heartfelt gesture of gratitude and a symbol of transformation.

At just 29, Nakini was already a mother of seven, malnourished and struggling to care for her children. Her situation worsened when her husband took a fourth wife, leaving Nakini feeling neglected and hopeless. Called “good for nothing,” she had little control over her life — until she met CHAT’s community partner Jackeline.

Jackeline introduced Nakini to vital information on family planning (FP) and sustainable livelihoods. This led to a life-changing meeting with nurse Ann, who provided her with a five-year contraceptive implant. For the first time, Nakini could take control of her health and future.

Freed from the burden of unintended pregnancies, Nakini began raising chickens — a small step toward independence that brought food security and income. Her health improved, and so did her children’s lives. Eventually, her husband noticed the remarkable change and, inspired by her success, encouraged his other wives to seek the same support.

Nakini’s story is more than personal progress; it’s a ripple effect of empowerment that changed an entire household. That thermos of tea represented hope, dignity, and a broken cycle of poverty.

Thanks to your generous support through GlobalGiving, stories like Nakini’s are becoming more common. In the past three months alone, CHAT has:

  • Reached 3,844 individuals with life-saving health and FP information.
  • Provided 1,098 clients with access to modern contraceptive methods.
  • Enabled 901 individuals to choose long-term pregnancy protection for 3 to 5 years.

Your contributions empower women in remote communities to make informed decisions, rebuild their lives, and transform their families. With your continued support, CHAT will keep delivering hope — one woman, one household, one thermos of tea at a time.
